Tyler Carson Brings Fresh Perspective to Personnel Role
Tyler Carson joined the college as personnel specialist in October 2023. He believes that he brings a healthy “outsider” angle to Rocky Top, being new to the university setting.
“I come from sales and management in the private business sector,” said Carson. “So, I think I bring a different perspective to the public/higher education world.”
Before his business-world career, he was an education major at Ohio University, where he also worked as a resident assistant in on-campus housing for three years. He formed a passion for service and higher education in these roles.
“I enjoy being a part of the higher education landscape, knowing ultimately everything we do helps to benefit our students and community,” said Carson. “I’m a service-oriented person, so I enjoy being a resource and a guide for others and helping them to navigate unfamiliar tasks and processes.”
He has come to appreciate the Big Orange Spirit in his short time here, and loves to eat lunch outside so he can enjoy the overall campus buzz.
In his arts and sciences role, Carson works with college and department staff to write and finalize new staff position descriptions and job ads as the college continues to grow.
“I also assist with faculty promotion processes, appointment letters, and any other administrative needs that support the business managers and department heads,” he said.
Carson was born and raised in Lancaster, Ohio, just outside Columbus. He and wife Audrey (married for 12 years in June) started their family in Pickerington, between these two cities. They came to Knoxville with their two boys, 8-year-old Colt and 9-year old Shiloh. The Carsons enjoy the natural wonders of East Tennessee.
“We’re trying to explore as many of the local hiking trails and lakes in the area as we can,” said Carson “Trying to get more experienced in kayaking, paddle boarding, etc. We hope to make friends with someone who owns a boat!”
