Jennifer Slate Applies Faculty Experience to Administrative Role
Jennifer Slate is the administrative assistant to the divisional deans of the College of Arts and Sciences. In this role, she schedules appointments and helps visitors navigate the third floor of Ayres Hall.
New to UT, Slate applies 10 years of experience as a lecturer and adjunct professor—and the experience of raising three college students and graduates—to her administrative role in the college.
“I previously taught at Clemson University and Pellissippi Community College; was assistant editor at a family magazine in Charlottesville, Virginia, and spent 10 years working with students in campus ministry at the University of Virginia,” she said.
A native of Surfside Beach, South Carolina, Slate earned her BA degree in secondary education and her MA in English at Clemson University. She enjoys Knoxville life now with husband Shawn and their three children—William, who graduated from UT in 2021; Mary Austin, a Berry College graduate; and Annabel, UT class of 2027.
“In my free time, you’ll find me riding my e-bike around downtown, thrift store shopping, and catching shows at Clarence Brown and the Tennessee Theatre,” said Slate.
In her new role, she enjoys working with the supportive co-workers in the college, having opportunities to develop new skills, and exposure to many UT special events like the English department’s creative writing speaker series and MicNite. She also appreciates the Volunteer Spirit that connects the campus community.
“I love that students and staff love being here,” said Slate. “Vols love being Vols.”
